right now

Grandpa and Triceratops look bemused.  Linden, on the other hand....
I expected to recap this past week with tales that involved some exciting house guests (grandma and grandpa), and some end-of-summer adventures.  And I suppose that is, in the end, the story that the photos tell.
some evening laughs with Grandma
But it was one of those very strange weeks that just.... I don't know.... floated by in a weird, sick haze.  The kids were sniffly, but mostly fine.  I was not feeling well at all.  But Clark - Clark was bed-ridden for the better part of three days.  I haven't seen him that ill in quite some time.  So Bill and Barb hightailed it out of here earlier than they had planned, and I sort of muddled through things as best I could.  I sure hope we're all getting this out of our system before school starts.

Flying from rock to rock
Anyway, no one really wants to hear about sickness any more than I want to relive it.  Instead, In this week before everyone starts their brand new year (September, will, I believe, forever be my New Year), I'll take a little snapshot of the kids as they are right now.

 Juniper:
Juniper is 6, going on... oh, I don't know.  16?  She is really into arguing for the sake of arguing these days, which is infuriating.  She is very fashion-conscious, and tears have been shed when I deem a particular outfit more of a "tunic" rather than a "dress" (thereby necessitating shorts or pants underneath).  We have also had some epic battles about not turning her room into a disaster every single day, and staying on task when it is time to clear a path through piles of her clothes, and doll paraphernalia, and tea sets, and teeny tiny pieces of paper that she likes to cut up, and markers and books.  You get the idea.  I am by no means a stickler for cleanliness, but this level of disorder drives me batty.

Juniper is also planning on becoming a great many things when she grows up.  Top of the list right now is artist.  Also included, however, are: yoga instructor, doctor, teacher, and mother.  And definitely an archeologist, and palaeontologist.  And a performer and story writer.  Maybe a "house builder" as well, she mused yesterday.  Something that will "make her strong".

She is clearly very nervous about starting grade 1, especially French Immersion.  She has been waking up most nights with bad dreams (which has not helped the sickness/sleep situation).  She is worried about not knowing as much french as the rest of the kids, but this was actually helped greatly when I pointed out that she will probably be the best reader in her class (which is true).  I'm sure she'll do just fine, but the lead-up is trying.

I find it hilarious and awesome when, out of the blue,  she properly uses phrases such as: "I'm developing a new technique", and "I'm just going to back up so I can gather enough momentum to make it up that steep hill".

This week in particular, she has been very, very focused on improving her monkey bar skills.  I have this video from earlier in the week, but since then, she has also mastered the spinning bars as well.

Linden:
Linden is as much of a whirlwind as ever.  He just.... doesn't stop.  He doesn't stop moving, or fiddling, or experimenting, or talking, or pushing boundaries. This is at once exhausting, wonderful, and frustrating.   It is one of those things that is kind of fascinating and hilarious to watch as a third party, but much more stressful as the parent who is trying to remain in good mental health, and to be responsible for his and others' safety.   Just as he is full of energy and exuberance, however, he is also full of love and charm.  He is usually willing to give you a big bear hug and a snuggle (for as long as his body lets him stay still), and randomly announces things like "I love ya!" and "I'm lucky to have you -  you're my special little mom".

As of this post, Linden wants to be an "airplane flyer (pilot) in a dinosaur costume" when he grows up. His favourite activities are, by far, biking, and creating/make-believing with his various trucks and trains and lego. These activities are always greatly enhanced by dirt and/or sand. He will actually sit still for extraordinary lengths of time when you read him stories.  He is also very musical, and loves both playing and listening to music.

He and Juniper are truly best friends, and love to play together.  He idolizes his big sister, and is, for the most part, happy to play whatever she suggests.  He also loves to "get fancy", just like she does. All this is not to say, however, that it is easy and intervention-free when they play. Sometimes they fight.  More often, however, they feed off of each other's energy to the point where I need to separate them before they do damage to themselves and everything around them. Linden is, I believe, pure energy.

He is an excellent eater (other than a few "plants" that he staunchly refuses to ingest), but is physically incapable of consuming a meal without making an impossibly large mess.  You'd think this would have improved over the years, but I honestly think it's gotten worse.

Linden will start school next week (!?), and is excited to be a "big kid", including riding a school bus.  We actually went to a "school bus safety" session aimed at first-timers this weekend, and we all got to ride a school bus and learn all the important rules.  Linden was super into it, and was the first to volunteer when the guy asked for someone to help with a demonstration.  He doesn't seem nervous or phased at all, but I don't think it has entirely sunk in that he'll be at a different school than Juniper.

Linden was so excited to play with his new digger (the old one was recalled due to lead) that he woke up, put on a hat, and got to work in his pjs.
And that, I believe, is enough for one week.  Except..... I've posted some new tutorials on JuniperandLinden.org!  Find them here. See you next week!

Summer colds seem so unfair

Mostly naked painting
This post is being written amidst a house of sneezes and snot and sore throats, and general fatigue.  Linden developed a full-on summer cold a few days ago, and is still physically unable to keep his germs to himself.  No matter how many times you remind him to catch his sneeze, or to just STOP throwing himself on your bed and rolling his snotty face on your pillow, he remains unable to contain himself.  So now the rest of us are beginning to drag our sorry selves around, just as Linden's energy is almost back to full.  Should be an awesome week.

Biking through the narrow woods paths...
... into the magical cedar stand....
... and across the the boardwalk
Despite Linden's sickened state this weekend, we still managed to get up to some adventures.  The thing about Linden is that, unless he is unable to function, he never wants to miss out.  So on a super fun mountain biking adventure (picture above), Linden would race around as fast as he could, yelling "waaaahooooooo!" as he sped down the hills, and complained loudly when it was time to go.  But after a few minutes in the car on the way home, he quietly whispered, with his eyes half closed, "remember, guys?   I'm still really sick".  I know how he feels.

Apart from biking, we also made our way to the historical Pinhey's point, where there was a bit of an archeological dig going on, complete with a section for kids.  They got their own patch of dirt, and all the tools they needed for unearthing, sifting, and brushing off the bits of ceramic that they found.  They were actually both really into it, but Juniper was especially taken with the activity.  I think she's added "archeologist" to the list of things she's going to do when she grows up.  She's going to be one busy woman.

Checking out one of the old stone buildings
Preparing for some digging
Shaking out the dirt
Brushing off one treasure and digging for more
We just said goodbye to one set of grandparents last week (Deb and Yvon), and this week we are lucky enough to hang out with another (grandma and grandpa).  So despite dragging our sorry selves around, I think there may be some fun to be had.  There will also be some unpacking to do -- both sets of grandparents brought up a truckload of our stuff that we had been storing at the farm for the last three years.  Unpacking, sorting, and (hopefully) culling -- this place is only so big, after all.   See you next week!

Just to say hello....

Female cardinal (I think?) that couldn't find its way out of our mesh gazebo
I don't have much to offer this week... after the constant Fredericton photography, I think I needed a bit of a break.  Plus, Juniper had the week off with me, and so we were out and about, doing errands and such, none of which was particularly photo-worthy.  Also, I haven't yet processed those videos I promised.  But I do have a few photos from a beautiful hike we did with Judith and Simon this weekend - our first trip to Gatineau Park.  We'll definitely be going back!

More next week - I promise!

NB: The Finalé

Juniper in a Linden tree (I couldn't resist)
We are now back at home in Kanata, having weathered the very (VERY) long return ride.  I don't regret our decision to do it in one go, but holy moly, 12 hours on the road is a tough slog.  The one saving grace was that both kids are now easily engrossed by videos for long periods of time.  I am normally not a huge fan of extended periods of screen time, but truly, it made the drive doable.  Plus, the kids basically never get to veg out for as long as they want, so the novelty was enough to keep them interested. Juniper, who is (by my doing), very late to the Frozen obsession, got to watch it something like 7 or 8 times in the course of our two weeks and 24 cumulative hours on the road.  Somehow, she just didn't tire of having it on repeat.  Ah, well.

There were, however, also other things to occupy their time - every extended pit stop, for instance, meant a new "road trip prize", carefully selected by me from the Dollarstore.  There were also babies to take care of, music to listen to (we had the Rheostatic's "Harmelodia", as well as the Barenaked Ladies' kids album, and a  bunch of Arcade Fire), and some books to read.

Juniper had a lot of mothering to do on the way back, what with two new (to her) "babies"
Crazy car people!
Anyway, this post is entitled "NB: The Finalé", so let's get to the pictures from the rest of our New Brunswick vacation, shall we?:

Farm time means a lot of time spent on the St. John river, much to everyone's delight
Liz, Linden, Juniper and Theresa getting towed.  This is Juniper's new favourite activity.
If you're not on the water, you might as well be in it!
Beach bums on treasure island
Grandma and Grandpa with their four grandkids
Snuggling with grandpa on the couch
Our 9th (or almost 17th, depending on how you count it) anniversary (photo compliments of Juniper!)
Riding the trike and trailer down to look for dinosaur bones on the beach
Look what had washed up to shore! (cow, most likely, or pig.  Or maybe T-Rex). More importantly, look at that expression.

Things got real at the wheel of the tractor
Visiting with great-grammy Betty
On a date with Clark.  I do not endorse any part of this photo.
When we got home, Juniper and Linden's bean stalk had not only wound its way to the top of the blind string...
... it had produced some beans!
And finally, one more wrap-up video.  I've got a backlog of Juniper and Linden . org gems, which I aim to have up next week, so stay tuned!

NB, part 2

The St. John river, along my daily walk
We have now been in New Brunswick for a full week, and we have celebrated Juniper's 6th birthday twice.  That means, as you might imagine, that I have a veritable crap-load of pictures to post.  So, without further ado, I bring you: New Brunswick, part two!

The view from one of my favourite places, just up from my parent's house
1. Family gatherings.  There is never a dull moment when we're home for a visit.  This is, in large part, because there are always so many people to see, most of which are part of our large extended family.

Juniper (literally) looking up to her cousin Ethan
Linden (literally) hanging with cousin Sawyer
We got to see Taylor, and meet Grant!
We also got to meet Chelsea!
Pat, Liz, Juniper, and one really big ham
Juniper and Mary
Juniper's attempt at taking a generational shot
Resting after a bit of soccer with Ali
Notice any resemblance? (you should see pictures of Sawyer at Linden's age)
My sister Kelli and her (way too grown-up) family
Juniper was dancing in the background, specifically trying to make the boys laugh.  Jamie remained stoic.
An afternoon with great aunt Evie and great uncle Gerry

 2. Juniper's Fredericton Birthday.  The event of the year happened, folks, and at one point Juniper proclaimed "this is the best party I've ever been to!".  Thank god.

Ruth stopped by or a short little birthday visit before hitting the road for the long drive back to Ottawa!
Here, she is blissfully unaware that Linden has morphed into a monster that is about to devour her whole.
Phew!  Turns out it was a false alarm.
The activities got underway later in the afternoon.  It was a perfect day for lots of water fun, snacks, and some very big bubbles.
I found a slip and slide for the occasion - the very last one at the store!
You can't beat wearing a Frozen party hat and a swimsuit on your birthday!
I think the adults were more mesmerized by the bubbles than the kids
This was clearly the part of the party where clothes were optional
The vanBuskirks joined in on the fun!
One gourmet bird cake, as requested.  It even had some white "eggs" for those who did not want chocolate.
Matt, Lacie and Isa. I think Isa won the prize for most enthusiastic party goer!
It's pretty awesome that we now get to hang with Zack in Fredericton AND in Ottawa!
Juniper was THRILLED to get her very own violin.
Posing with my brother Paul at his store.  We stopped in to show him what Juniper had chosen to get with the gift certificate they had given her:  she had just enough money on it to buy a unicorn for her and a horse for Linden.  How cute is that?
3.  The farm! There are always a huge amount of photos taken at the Richards farm every year - it is both one of the most beautiful and fun places in the whole world, I reckon. Also, Juniper had a second birthday there.

The first thing Linden wanted to do when we got there was, of course, drive the tractor.
Helping to load the hay onto the elevator, in four parts:

1. Pose on top of hay
2. Try very hard (but unsuccessfully) to lift the bale on your own
3. Admit that perhaps you need some help
4. Carry it over to the elevator.

How to successfully execute a photo shoot on a pile of wood:

1. Run enthusiastically over to the pile
2. Instead of waiting for help, climb the rickety pile all by yourself
3. Do your best "silly" face when your mother asks you to smile
4. Get down to business
5. Decide the shoot isn't done, and therefore climb up the other side.
6. Let your inner model flow. Chose some particularly creative poses
7. End the shoot by reminding everyone how cute you are.

The story of a magical walk in the woods:

Juniper finds a basket with which to collect forest treasures
The kids race each other up the lane.  Juniper loses a race, and develops a terrible case of "bad attitude".  I call her a sore loser.  Emotions run high.
We make it to the woods.  Theresa tries to cure Juniper's bad attitude, but it has unfortunately settled in deeply.
Juniper abandons the woods walk, and stalks off back to the farm on her own in a huff.
The rest of us carry on, undeterred.
Theresa and Linden forage in the ferns...
... and walk through the now completely overgrown path.  Some of the ferns were taller than Linden!
He therefore needed a bit of a lift sometimes...
... and took a quick nap on a particularly soft patch of moss
Past the ferns, and into the grasses
Trying to find some golden thread
And finally, some more random farm shots:

Everyone got a wee bit burned, but it was worth it!
Linden, Mary and a feather
Excited for birthday #2!
A close-up of the birthday girl and her custom-made crown

Since Linden is never at the farm for his birthday, he got a cake as well!
Figuring out a puzzle with uncle Brad

Group shot in the field
Silly group shot!  Clearly the grandmas have to up their game.
Liz and Linden share a laugh

And finally, here is a little video compilation of a few New Brunswick shenanigans.  See you next week for the final NB instalment!
